Harness clean, cost-effective energy with solar panels for farm buildings

Farms and other agricultural businesses face some of the highest energy demands of any sector. From refrigeration units and grain dryers to milking parlours, poultry sheds, and irrigation pumps, operations demand reliable electricity throughout the day. At the same time, energy prices remain volatile, squeezing margins and creating uncertainty for long-term planning.

installing solar panels on agricultural buildings gives farmers control. By turning unused barn or shed roofs into power generators, you can cut bills, reduce reliance on the grid, and futureproof your operations against rising costs. At Purelec, we design tailored systems that maximise your roof space and deliver measurable savings – all with minimal disruption to your daily farming routines.

Cut costs and strengthen your farm's resilience

Installing solar panels for farm buildings is one of the most effective ways to cut overheads while strengthening sustainability efforts. Farms are particularly well suited to solar energy thanks to their consistently high daytime electricity use, whether that’s powering refrigeration, grain dryers, or milking parlours.

By generating clean electricity on site, farmers can lower bills and protect themselves from volatile energy prices, reducing reliance on the grid and avoiding sudden tariff hikes. At the same time, idle roof space on barns, sheds, and grain stores is transformed into a valuable asset, working year-round to produce power. With the option of battery storage, farms can also safeguard operations during outages and make use of surplus energy when demand is high.

tailored

Built for efficiency,
with minimal disruption

We understand that farming operations can’t stop for an installation. Whether it’s livestock care, milking, or crop processing, downtime costs money. That’s why we work flexibly to reduce disruption, even scheduling out-of-hours work when needed. We also coordinate closely with your team to ensure scaffolding, site access, and health and safety measures fit around your day-to-day activities.

Committed to excellence

Solar grants for farming

The Improving Farm Productivity Grant (Round 2), which included support on solar panels for agricultural buildings, is now closed to new applications. While there isn’t a direct funding stream for agricultural solar panel installation at the moment, future rounds may reopen – and we’ll be ready to guide our customers when they do.

In the meantime, other funding schemes may apply in certain circumstances:

  • Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) – open to farmers within National Parks or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where solar may form part of wider projects to mitigate climate change.
  • Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier (CSHT) – launching in September 2025 by invitation, focused on land management and climate resilience.
  • Environmental Land Management (ELM) capital items – closed for now, but new rounds could include renewable energy infrastructure.

At Purelec, we stay on top of the latest agricultural grants and can advise on the best routes to explore when planning your solar installation.

FAQs

Explore our frequently asked questions about solar for farms and agriculture. If you still need support, get in touch with our experts.

How much could our farm buildings save with solar energy?
A solar system for agriculture can reap significant savings, but these vary depending on system size and usage. Many farms reduce annual energy bills by thousands of pounds.

Do we need planning permission to install solar panels on barns or sheds?
Most installations on existing agricultural buildings don’t require planning permission, but we’ll confirm during your site survey. Smaller G98 systems can be connected without prior approval, while larger G99 setups require Distribution Network Operator (DNO) permission, which we handle on your behalf.

Will the installation disrupt our farming operations?
We plan around your farm’s schedule and can work out of hours if required. Scaffold and safety measures are carefully managed, and a typical 50kWp barn-roof system takes around three weeks to complete the project.

Can we store the solar power generated for use overnight or in low light?
Yes, battery storage systems can provide excess energy to use during evenings or in low-generation periods. But this isn’t right for every agricultural business. For example, if you use all the on-site generation in the day, leaving little to no excess solar to be stored within the battery, this option might not provide sensible returns. At the early stages of your project, we’ll work with you to create the optimum solution for your requirements.

How much solar do I need?

All of our clients’ needs and demands are different. To build the best solar system, we’ll look at your farm’s on-site annual consumption, usage patterns, and the rate you are paying for your energy right now. We then evaluate this against your CapEx budget, available roof space, and favourable roof elevations or floor area where solar could be installed. For some agricultural businesses, ROI is the main consideration, while carbon offset might be the priority for others. Whatever your need, we’ll listen carefully to advise on how solar can add the best value.

What funding or grants are available for farms installing solar panels?
The Improving Farm Productivity Grant is the most relevant scheme for agricultural businesses – keep an eye out for Round 3 opening.
