Powering Community Growth: Purelec Energy Delivers Advanced Hybrid Solar & Storage Solution for Bradford Trident

Purelec Energy recently completed a crucial commercial energy infrastructure upgrade for Bradford Trident, a vital community anchor organisation dedicated to supporting the Little Horton and Southern Bradford areas. This project, completed in June, was designed to substantially increase energy independence, reduce operating costs, and enhance the environmental credentials of their premises, which hosts services ranging from enterprise support to an early years nursery.

Scaling Up: Expanding the PV Array

The installation significantly expanded an existing solar array originally installed by Purelec Energy in 2019, which comprised a 30kW PV system on the concrete tile pitched roof. The new phase involved a major capacity boost, adding a 44.65 kWp PV array to the structure

High-Efficiency Modules and Robust Mounting: The expansion saw the installation of 96 Aiko 470W Panels. These panels belong to the Neostar 2P Mono-Glass Module family and boast a high efficiency of 23.6%. Crucially for long-term investment security, the Aiko panels come with a 15-year product warranty and an impressive 30-year linear performance warranty.

To secure the new panels onto the metal trapezoidal roof, we utilised the specialized Renusol MetaSole+ (MS+) fixings. The MS+ system is engineered specifically for pitched trapezoidal metal roofs, employing short, non-continuous rails that allow flexible configuration while saving material. The components are fastened directly into the roof using self-cutting screws, ensuring a solid and efficient installation process.

Maximising Yield with Optimisation: A significant challenge addressed in the design was shading cast by the higher atrium roof section. To prevent this shading from compromising the entire solar array’s performance, 30 Tigo TS4-A-O Optimisers were deployed on the affected modules. These Flex MLPE (Module Level Power Electronics) units are critical, as they perform partial shading optimisation to increase energy production and enable module-level monitoring. The TS4-A-O models are designed to maximise lifetime yield even with shade and age tolerance, providing optimization right out of the box.

The Core: Hybrid Power and Storage

The expanded PV system is paired with powerful hybrid inverter technology and a substantial energy storage system, transitioning the premises from a simple solar setup to a smart, resilient power hub. The combined system manages the new 45.12 kWp array alongside the existing 27.6kW SolarEdge array.

SunSynk 50kW Hybrid Inverter: At the heart of the system is the SunSynk 50kW 3-Phase Hybrid Inverter . This sophisticated unit acts as a multifunctional power management tool, combining the functions of an inverter, solar charger, and battery charger to provide uninterruptible power support. Designed for easy installation and maintenance, the inverter manages the flow of power from multiple sources, including solar, mains power (grid), and generators. The unit features four MPPT trackers and supports a maximum DC input power of 65,000W (65kW), providing exceptional power handling capability.

High-Capacity Energy Storage: Installed alongside the inverter is a significant 61.44kWh SunSynk High Voltage (HV) Series Battery stack. This modular lithium-ion energy storage system is specifically suitable for large-scale installations like commercial sites. The 61.44 kWh total capacity is achieved by configuring 12 individual 5.12 kWh battery modules in series. The HV Series is characterized by high integration and long service life, ensuring a reliable backup power supply. The battery system actively promotes the application of renewable energy by helping to smooth the load curve and achieve peak load transfer. The system provides a usable energy capacity of 55.29 kWh.
