Here, we detail how we crafted a tailored solution that honours the building’s historic charm while maximising energy efficiency. By addressing specific challenges and prioritising both aesthetic and functional requirements, Purelec Energy helped Lindley Liberal Club take a significant step towards sustainability.
Lindley Liberal Club, a 19th-century building located in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, serves as a vital community hub for members and its 23 staff. The organisation had tried to train staff and members to be more efficient, but had been contemplating solar panel installation for several years, balancing the costs, environmental benefits, and potential returns. The club uses cellar coolers that run 24/7, and the surge in energy prices resulting from the war in Ukraine made the return on investment more necessary, prompting the club to finally make the transition to solar power.
After meeting with three solar PV installation companies, Lindley Liberal Club chose Purelec Energy as they were impressed with Ross, and the information and details provided. Preserving the building’s historic appearance while ensuring efficient energy production were key priorities, but the condition of the roof was unknown.
Firstly, we carried out a site visit to assess the roof’s integrity, and completed a structural survey to ensure it could carry the additional weight of the panels and any snow. This visit also enabled us to determine how to store equipment while on site, the best route for cables, and what scaffolding would be required. We also applied to the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO), Northern Power Grid on behalf of Lindley Liberal Club and gained permission to connect the system to the national grid’s energy network.
To maintain the character of the 1887-built Lindley Liberal Club, we recommended and installed 33 Jinko All Black Solar Panels. These panels blend seamlessly with the dark roof slates, ensuring the visual appeal of the building remains intact while highlighting the club’s commitment to sustainability.
Considering the traditional slate roof, we used Renusol Hooks & Rails with Genius SolarFlash® kits to mount the panels. This method allows the brackets to move independently in the wind, preventing damage to the slate. The SolarFlash system ensures a water-tight installation, preserving the roof’s integrity and preventing water ingress.
The chimney’s position on the west side of the roof meant some panels would be shaded at times. To address this, we installed Tigo optimisers. These devices enhance energy output by using Impedance Matching, which works with the inverter’s Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) system to optimise each panel’s performance regardless of shading, ensuring maximum yield throughout the day.
Finally, to determine the viability of a battery storage system, we installed a Solis Export Power Manager alongside a Solis Inverter to monitor energy usage across the site. Once enough data has been gathered, it will be reviewed – allowing the club to make an informed decision about further enhancing their energy system with battery storage.
Lindley Liberal Club now boasts a modern solar power solution that aligns with its historic aesthetic. The 33 Jinko All Black Solar Panels, supported by a Solis 15kW Three Phase Solar Inverter and Tigo optimisers, all ensure optimal performance despite shading challenges. Meanwhile, the Renusol Hooks & Rails and SolarFlash kits protect the traditional slate roof, maintaining the building’s integrity.
The advanced monitoring system will provide crucial data over the next year, guiding the club in making future decisions regarding battery storage. According to the app, the club’s current reduction in carbon footprint is 17.41 tonnes. This project not only helps Lindley Liberal Club reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and combat rising energy costs but also demonstrates a commitment to preserving the community’s heritage while embracing modern, sustainable technology.hroughout the day, preventing underperforming panels from reducing the system’s overall performance. Whilst optimisers are not always needed, this was a case where their use adds real value.
“Purelec Energy have been very efficient in all the processes, and have assisted in all matters raised. I can highly recommend them.”
Dawn Fawcett, secretary, Lindley Liberal Club
