An MP filling out a survey about making Solar Panels compulsory for new build homes

A recent survey has revealed that 79% of MPs are in favour of requiring the installation of solar panels on all new homes.

In a significant move towards sustainable living and energy efficiency, the poll by YouGov reveals that almost eight in ten Members of Parliament (MPs) support the introduction of regulations that would make the installation of solar panels compulsory for all new-build homes. This comes as the government deliberates on proposals that could shape the future of residential construction under the Future Homes Standard, set to be implemented next year.

Three out of five MPs also support the idea of making battery storage systems, such as the GivEnergy All In One, mandatory.

The poll indicates a strong backing for solar energy, with 79% of the 107 MPs surveyed advocating for the inclusion of solar panels in newly built houses. Furthermore, the survey shows that a majority, three in five MPs (61%), also support the idea of making battery storage systems mandatory in new homes to enhance the benefits derived from solar panels.

“Prime opportunity to promote renewable energy across the UK”

These findings come at a time when the government is in the midst of considering pivotal new regulations under the Future Homes Standard, which aims to establish benchmarks for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and carbon reduction. Advocates argue that these regulations offer a prime opportunity to promote renewable energy across the UK and ensure lower energy costs for homeowners.

The MCS Foundation, responsible for commissioning the poll, highlights that the overwhelming support for solar power and battery storage from MPs signifies a recognition of the importance of homes that are capable of generating their own clean energy. David Cowdrey, Director of External Affairs at the MCS Foundation, emphasised the necessity of integrating renewable energy solutions, saying:

“When it comes to constructing modern homes that are climate-friendly and cheap to run, building-in solar panels, batteries for energy storage, and heat pumps from the start is very clearly the way to go.”

“It is very encouraging that such a clear majority of MPs back the principle of renewable energy for all new homes. The Government now has a mandate to require a meaningful deployment of solar panels as well as battery storage on new-builds under the Future Homes Standard, and it must enact that as soon as possible.”

“The policy would save newbuild homeowners between £910 to £2,120 per year”

Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of the Solar Energy UK trade association, echoed this sentiment, pointing out the multiple benefits of mandating solar power for new housing. He said:

“Everyone wins from making solar power effectively mandatory for new housing. It means lower bills for newbuild homeowners and greater energy security for us all, plus progress towards net zero, through cutting reliance on pricey natural gas. The policy would save newbuild homeowners between £910 to £2,120 per year, according to the Government consultation, while pushing purchase prices up only marginally.”

The proposed Future Homes Standard could mark the end for fossil fuel and “hydrogen-ready” boilers, positioning heat pumps or low-carbon heat networks as the primary heating solutions for new homes. This shift aims to deliver significant carbon savings and align with the goal of creating ‘zero-carbon ready’ homes, as current consultations suggest there is no feasible alternative that would allow for the continuation of fossil fuel heating solutions while also achieving these carbon reduction targets.

This poll not only sheds light on the parliamentary consensus regarding the future of housing in the UK but also sets the stage for potentially transformative regulations that could redefine energy use and sustainability in the residential sector for generations to come.
