Bespoke solar solution for Luscombe Motors

Luscombe Motors, a franchised motor dealer in Leeds, West Yorkshire, has harnessed the power of solar technology to drive its sustainability and energy-saving goals forward.

Here, we detail how we delivered a bespoke solar solution across four busy dealership buildings, tackling unique site challenges and seamlessly integrating energy-efficient systems.

The brief

Luscombe Motors, a car retailer with 78 employees based in Leeds, sought to reduce its carbon footprint and cut energy costs by installing solar panels across four buildings. Amid rising energy prices, the company wanted a solution to lower operational expenses while enhancing their sustainability credentials. The project faced logistical challenges, such as an aging electrical system in one of the buildings and a decision to resurface the roofs, which caused delays.

Our team worked closely with Luscombe Motors to tailor a solar energy solution that would meet its energy efficiency goals while addressing the unique constraints of the site. We conducted thorough technical and structural assessments of the buildings, taking into account the high public footfall and vehicle movements that are part of Luscombe’s daily operations. The system was installed in phases, accommodating roof repairs and electrical upgrades without causing major disruptions.

We installed a combination of solar panels across the buildings, supported by export power managers (EPMs) to monitor energy consumption and distribution. This ensured compliance with the grid’s export limitations.

The project included:

  • 87.74 kWp system for the MG building
  • 52.48 kWp for the Mitsubishi building
  • 49.20 kWp for the Jacuzzi building
  • 43.46 kWp for the Suzuki building

Throughout the process, Purelec coordinated with third-party contractors and adapted to schedule changes, ensuring seamless progress.

The result

The project was completed on time and within budget, delivering outstanding results. Each building has consistently exceeded its predicted energy yield, with the majority of the energy generated being consumed onsite. For instance, the MG building consumed 89% of its solar-generated energy, with only 11% exported to the grid. Luscombe Motors has seen a significant reduction in its carbon footprint, including a CO2 reduction of 83.64 tonnes for the MG building alone.

Additionally, the solar installation has had a positive impact on Luscombe’s image as an environmentally-conscious business, promoting its sustainability efforts to both customers and the wider public. Looking ahead, Luscombe Motors plans to further its green initiatives by installing additional EV charging points, with ongoing consideration made towards the benefits of adding battery storage.

“We installed solar panels across four of our buildings as part of our commitment to enhance our green credentials. Purelec provided an excellent service, with seamless installation and the ability to monitor performance through an app. Jason was always on hand to resolve any issues.”
